What is Frequency ?

When a musical sound is produced in a medium such as air, it causes air molecules to vibrate. When these vibrations reach our ears, our ears vibrate at the same frequencies, and the signal is converted from a sound in the air into electrical signals that our brain interprets as sound. The frequency refers to the number of times per second that a sound wave’s cycle repeats. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch you perceive.

The audio spectrum is the audible frequency range at which humans can hear. Sound frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz) unit.

The audio spectrum range spans from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and can be broken down, into several bands as shown in the graph above

Frequency response describes a range of audible frequencies. A speaker can reproduce between 20 Hz (deep bass) and 20 kHz (a piercingly high frequency), which is considered the range of human hearing. In reality, our hearing does not typically extend up to 20 kHz (especially as we get older), and bass frequencies below 30 Hz tend to be felt more than heard.

All instruments have their own specific frequency range and in a very clean production, every track has had Eq applied to allow it to fit in the mix over the full audio spectrum.

Everyone has different amplifiers and speakers, therefore a specialised custom processing tool with over powered EQ would greatly improve the ability to produce a “sound system” sound with 4 sound groups, that you can turn on and off. Now imagine being able to tune into the prominent frequencies of any instrument in the music you are playing , then adding FX that blend into the mix, independent of the kill bands. Why does the music “sound” different when you hear it at a reggae dance then at home?

The reason is not just huge speaker stacks, although there is of course a huge emphasis on the sub bass, but there is a particular way of EQing using special equipment, and overall audio delivery ,that makes it sound a certain way. The “brain” or control centre of this, is usually perched at the top of a rack of some sort, and is called a “preamp”. It is a kind of an analog mixer with music source inputs, aux sends, EQ section, filters and sometimes built-in fx and dub siren. A preamp also includes a crossover section, which separates frequencies, to efficiently send signal to power amplifiers and speaker arrays such as bass, mids and tops. Operators often use the preamps creatively, by EQing, and using parametric kill switches to “mould” the sound as they like. The rest of the control tower holds auxiliary equipment such as tape echo, digital delay, EQ, sirens and fx. The operator ( a term for someone who controls the sound, and the shaping of it, whilst maybe not being the person selectiing the music, who is called the “selectah”) can create a special mix of the music, using all this equipment and the way its delivered would essentially engage the listeners better then just leaving the track playing. We feel that this entire concept has been taken to the next level with the FreQQ. We have simplified the process, and made it accessible to all, by paring down and delivering the basics of operation, all in one unit. You can now recreate that remastered “sound” that you have encountered, in your own living room! (Or party. Or even, sound system event!) Thanks to the implementation of special features, this application will allow you to go deep into any music and explore it, and tweak it live, in a way never seen or heard before in software form.

So Whats Amp FreQQ all about ? pronounced “Amp Freak”!

In a nutshell, you can play 2 (stereo) music tracks one at a time, from any source (internal players, or the external audio inputs) and “dub it” (mix the sound) live and “on the fly”. Amp FreQQ Sculpts frequencies into four separate bands for Eqing and manipulation. One of the core features of this app are the 4 x EQ Kill switches. Each band is fully adjustable, (enabling you to match the crossover frequencies of the bands to the same as the frequencies set on your LMS (loudspeaker management system) or crossover, (if you would like AmpFreqq to play that way, that is! Set it your own way. You should not need to adjust these in most cases. The “kill” band gain faders are set at 0dB, centre position at default (There is available gain, up to 12 dB , however we highly recommend using the default set gains first, to avoid overloading or clipping anything).

Super powerful custom 4 band fully parametric equalizer which allows, for macro changes on the audio signal, whilst a 10 band graphic equaliser is also included, for finer frequency adjustment.

Another unique feature of the FreQQ is FX delivery. The traditional way is to “send” using an aux send knob on a mixer. We implemented the same process, by using momentary triggers which then pass the signal through independent , sweepable band pass filter sections. This allows the user to accurately punch and blend in effects as though they were in the original recording, whilst cutting out unwanted frequencies from the “send” and “return” signals, therefore creating new “versions” of their music on the fly.

12 slot sample player, for short audio samples to be included in the mix. Both of which are independently routed to the same FX processors. Entire tracks can also be played through the sampler (To utilise the Bypass Kills feature)

The one knob DubFilter is a HP/LP adjustable resonant filter with a several routing options, High Pass, Low Pass and resonance settings.

Amp FreQQ can almost be thought of like an instrument. You use the kills, FX, filters, sirens and samples to make a completely new mix of the music you are playing…. every time!
